Background
The journey began when Karl Leibinger discovered our company WoodWelding® which had pioneered a technique to embed polymer dowels into wood using ultrasound, creating a unique welding effect. Captivated by the simplicity and speed of this method, and recognizing the similarities between wood and bone structures, the KLS engineering team saw potential for its application in CMF surgery, particularly with resorbable materials.
Drawing inspiration from wood's cavity structure, which mirrors that of human bones, KLS and Woodwelding refined and adapted the technique. The result? The birth of SonicWeld Rx®. This groundbreaking innovation was nothing short of revolutionary in its time, a claim supported by numerous publications that attest to the system's efficacy.
Challenge
Titanium implants, while widely used and effective, come with their own set of challenges. One significant drawback is the potential need for a second surgery to remove the implant, adding to the patient's recovery time and medical costs. Additionally, there can be concerns about long-term biocompatibility, potential allergic reactions, and the interference with imaging techniques like MRI.
While resorbable implants can often present a more favorable option, securing them can sometimes be a challenging and time-consuming process.
Solution
With our Bonewelding technology, we've significantly shortened the implantation duration and simultaneously enhanced mechanical stability. This advancement has made the use of resorbable implants more accessible and appealing to surgeons.
